The Bees Are Bringing in Pollen

The recent warm weather has had spring arrive with a boom of flowering resources almost overnight. What we get to observe when that happens is the mad rush by the bees to gather pollen and return to the hive. This makes the beekeepers heart sing.

The bees are collecting pollen — their primary protein source. This signals brood rearing, (baby bees) colony expansion, and seasonal growth. A strong pollen flow means a thriving hive and a healthy ecosystem. Pollinators support fruits, vegetables, and biodiversity and thereby, healthy bees contribute directly to human nutrition and ecosystem resilience.

But for many of us this season ensures the return of the perpetual kleenex box, the dripping nose and itchy, watering eyes. As the trees and the flowers spring into life our allergies follow suit. In many Urban environments favor male trees that release large amounts of airborne pollen. This lightweight pollen triggers allergies and the rush to the local pharmacy for Benadryl, Claritin and other allergy relief.

Clinical research and many homeopaths suggest local raw honey may reduce allergy symptoms through anti-inflammatory effects and immune modulation. Some studies show improved symptom control when local honey is consumed regularly.

Why local honey and what does that mean for you? Local honey means, same bloom season in which your allergies are created. In our area, local honey reflects a shared bloom zone across Northern Illinois, Mid-Wisconsin, and Central Illinois— areas with similar flowering cycles.

By consuming a spoon of honey a day for several weeks most people experience a significant improvement of the symptoms they are suffering from and no longer need their allergy medication. While some studies often claim the evidence is inconclusive, I have had many positive testimonials throughout the years. People have shared they no longer need their allergy medication after about 30 days of consuming pure local raw honey.

Best yet, it's a healthy food that supports you in a multitude of ways beyond just helping with local allergies and unlike many alternatives you could opt for, for allergies, and honey has no side effects.

A few key benefits of consuming local raw honey include:

• Supports immune health

• Provides antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties

• Nourishes the gut microbiome

• Connects you to your local ecosystem

Final Thought,

When bees bring in pollen, the land is thriving. Supporting pollinators supports our food system, our health, and our future. When you pick up some local raw honey you support your local bees and beekeepers, your allergies and your immune system all in one.
